Existing 3D digitization technology uses mesh models to represent the object geometrically and texture mapping or material selection to color the object. These methods are often visually unconvincing: as a person moves around the object, they will quickly notice the lack of differing reflectance patterns and the lack of motion parallax from rough textures pasted on flat surfaces.
Lightbox uses image-based rendering, a totally different method of representing an object that produces stunningly realistic holograms that can be viewed from any perspective. During capture, every reflection, refraction, and absorption of an object is recorded from a multitude of vantages. During rendering, given the viewer’s position and orientation, a novel view is constructed, accurately simulating the object’s appearance down to the ray of light.
